SEO Email: Atone Technologies

This is one in a series of posts reviewing and looking at how some of the SEO companies which use bulk emails/spam with ‘we can help your terrible site’ type emails really can (and actually mostly can’t!) help your site.

Read some simple explanations of some of the SEO terms used on this post…

The initial spam came from an ‘Nicole’ who was using a slightly random looking @gmail.com email address. Nicole’s email had the subject “# Affordable Price For Web Design..” and went:

As you can see the language in this email didn’t seem like that of a native English speaker, even though it came with a ‘western’ name.

Anyway, I replied to the email and got a reply from Suresh who was using an @atonetechnologies.com (although subsequent emails from him have also come from an atone type gmail account).

This seems like quite a ‘template’ reply but it’s one complete with spelling errors and more ‘none native’ English in it… I replied asking more about he meant about the improvements needed on the site and also with some keywords my site targets (but not my server’s info as I won’t be giving that to an SEO spammer!):

Hi Suresh,

Please can you tell me more about what you mean by ‘need improvement with meta tags image tag and content optimize’?

Thanks.

But here are a list of keywords:
Christmas Customs
Christmas Traditions
Christmas around the world
Christmas History
Christmas story for kids

Thanks,

James

Now the site is already ranking in the top three of Google for all of those keywords, so it’s fun to see if SEO spammers can actually work that out…

I then had two more emails from Suresh over the next day and here they are (spelling mistakes and all)…

We will change according keywords ang relevant only.

Many thanks

Hi James,

As I told you about improvement in your website, it means need on pages seo updates website’s pages. Don’t worry about it

And keywords should be, like :
Christmas Customs in Netherland
Christmas around the world
Christmas story for kids china
Christmas Traditions Netherland

Need following details for start :
• FTP details for file upload on server

• WP login details for editing in pages for meta tags (on page SEO)

Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any questions.

I’m still not sure what the improvements actually need to be! And he also still wants my server info…

And then there’s the rather odd suggested keywords. (More on those later.) So I replied again asking about the improvements, why the keywords aren’t the ones I asked to use and why he wants a WordPress login as my site doesn’t use WordPress (which is actually really easy to tell)…

Hi Suresh,

I’m sorry but I don’t understand what you mean by “We will change according keywords ang relevant only”. Can you explain that more?

Also please can you use the keywords I gave you? Why can’t I use them rather than ones you suggest? I know what my site is trying to target!

And my site doesn’t use WordPress, so why are you asking for a WordPress login?

Please can you answer my questions above.

Thanks,

James

And that got this reply:

Hi James,
I clearing your about all points , don’t worry .

“We will change according keywords and relevant only” , It means we will updates in meta tags with keywords in pages.

Why can’t I use them rather than ones you suggest? , We were want use keywords with according your area city. And I already include your keywords. Like :

Christmas Customs in Netherland
Christmas around the world
Christmas story for kids china
Christmas Traditions Netherland

why are you asking for a WordPress login? , need user and password details for editing in website. (or server hosting details) .

James – If do you have any questions about

Well, I thought it was time to tell Suresh I wasn’t interested. So I sent this and started it with a question (well he did ask…):

Hi Suresh,

Yes I do have a question. If you’re the “Most trusted Internet Marketing Agency in India” why do you spam people (from random Gmail accounts) to get business?

That doesn’t seem very trustworthy.

I’ve been a web designer and developer for 20 years. I reply to SEO spammers to see what ‘services’ they offer and the things they say and use to get clients.

www.whychristmas.com has also been on the web for nearly 20 years. It had over 20 MILLION pageloads last year.

You say you want to add keywords “according your area city” but that’s rubbish. My site is global, it isn’t a local business targeting an area (which should be very obvious) and even then I’m based in the UK, so why add things about The Netherlands and China? It is because they’re on the home page of the site?! And anyway, they’re not cities, they’re countries!!!

Did you check how the site was already ranking for your suggested keywords?

The site is already 1 or 2 on Google for three of them and is number 10 for the other one. So I’m not sure how much you’d be able to do by changing a meta tag or two!

So I won’t be using your service and please do not spam me again.

James

As you can see from my email, it seems he got the ‘area’ keywords he suggested from the home page of my site. But I’d have thought it was pretty obvious that the site isn’t ‘based in’ The Netherlands or China; or that it’s specifically targeting those places (and he’d also never asked anything about the site but wanted the login so he could improve it!)

It’s been several days and I’ve not had a reply from Suresh. I guess Atone Technologies are another SEO company that don’t like answering questions when it’s pointed out that they’re spammers…

Looking at Their Site

With SEO spammers, I also like to look at their sites, to see if they practice what they preach (I mean would you trust a plumber who had leaking and rusty pipes all over their own house?!); and also to compare their site with a site they say they can help…

There site is https://www.atonetechnologies.com/

For HTML Validation, my site has no errors. Their site has 40 errors and 38 warnings. Not a great start…

Using the ‘WAVE’ Accessibility Testing Tool, their site has 38 errors and 103 contrast errors. My site has no errors of either kind!

Using Google’s Lighthouse Tool their site gets:

Performance: 20/100 (Not good)
Accessibility: 82/100 (Pretty good)
SEO: 83/100 (Pretty good)

My site gets:
Performance: 100/100
Accessibility: 100/100
SEO: 100/100

So my site is perfect!

Although their site get’s 90/100 using an automated SEO tool, when you actually look at the site’s code, it’s less of a good story.

They have three ‘Heading 1’ tags. You should only ever have one.

There’s no alt on the site’s logo.

They have no privacy policy but are collecting full IPs for Google Analytics. That breaks several privacy laws around the world.

They have links to their social media accounts. But both of their Facebook and Twitter accounts are set to be private, which is odd…

On their home page, there’s a ‘Work Progress’ graphic. One of the items is ‘Fixing of technical error’. It’s a shame they’ve not bothered to do that on their own site…

Another of the ‘Work Progress’ items is ‘Onpage optimization’ but with that lighthouse performance score, I’m not sure they actually know what the word optimisation means…

From searching for more information about the company, I think Suresh might ‘be’ the main/only person at Atone Technologies. His personal email is the only email on their site… On their LinkedIn page it says there are three employees, so even if there’s three, that’s rather less than the “150+ highly skill professionals” which Nicole said the company had in her initial spam!

There’s nothing wrong with being a sole/small company (I’m a sole trader). But they also claim they’re the ‘Best SEO Digital Marketing Agency’ and the ‘Most trusted Internet Marketing Agency in India’ which seems to be pushing credibility somewhat… (All I claim to offer is ‘Friendly Web Design in West Somerset’ which I do!)

They’ve got a portfolio with some of the sites they’ve made. Only the links on the portfolio items ARE NOT LINKED to those sites. That’s a pretty basic mistake…!

I looked at a couple of the sites in their portfolio and sadly, like their own site, they’re full of basic HTML and accessibility errors, just like on their own site.

Conclusion

Atone Technologies are yet another SEO spammer which claims to ‘trustworthy’ ‘the best’, yet they needs to use spam from random accounts to get business.

So if Atone Technologies (or any other spammer) says they can move the world for you, it might be best to press the delete button instead.

But the choice, as ever, is yours.
